Case Series of Isolated Deep Gray Matter Injuries in Preterm Infants

چکیده
Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in neonates is an important cause of brain damage that leads to severe neurological sequelae or death. Brain injury patterns on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans are used predict neurodevelopmental outcome severity. This case series describes the clinical manifestations and neurologic outcomes four preterm infants with isolated deep gray matter injuries. Basal ganglia thalamic lesions were noted without white cerebral cortex lesion MRI. All patients born at less than 33 weeks’ gestation required resuscitation delivery room. had seizures during neonatal period requiring anti-seizure medications. Severe disability was identified three using assessment tools. Another patient has not been evaluated tools yet as he 2 months’ corrected age, but supported by home ventilation via a tracheostomy due insufficient self-respiration. demonstrates injuries could outcomes.

Cortical Gray and Adjacent White Matter Demonstrate Synchronous Maturation in Very Preterm Infants.
Spatial and functional gradients of development have been described for the maturation of cerebral gray and white matter using histological and radiological approaches. We evaluated these patterns in very preterm (VPT) infants using diffusion tensor imaging. Data were obtained from 3 groups: 1) 22 VPT infants without white matter injury (WMI), of whom all had serial MRI studies during the neona...
متن کاملGray Matter Involvement in Radiologically Isolated Syndrome
The unanticipated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) detection in the brain of asymptomatic subjects of white matter lesions suggestive of multiple sclerosis has recently been named as radiologically isolated syndrome (RIS). The pathophysiological processes of RIS remain largely unknown and questions as to whether gray matter alterations actually occur in this entity are yet to be investigated in...
متن کاملVisual performance in preterm infants with brain injuries compared with low-risk preterm infants.
BACKGROUND Neonatal brain injuries are the main cause of visual deficit produced by damage to posterior visual pathways. While there are several studies of visual function in low-risk preterm infants or older children with brain injuries, research in children of early age is lacking. AIM To assess several aspects of visual function in preterm infants with brain injuries and to compare them wi...
متن کاملDiffusion abnormality of deep gray matter in external capsular hemorrhage.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE To our knowledge, diffusion abnormality of the unaffected deep gray matter during striatocapsular hemorrhage has not been previously described in the literature. We report the presence of the diffusion abnormality separated from hematoma in patients with external capsular (lateral striatocapsular) hemorrhage and suggest the plausible mechanisms of diffusion signal intensi...
متن کاملCognitive Implications of Deep Gray Matter Iron in Multiple Sclerosis.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Deep gray matter iron accumulation is increasingly recognized in association with multiple sclerosis and can be measured in vivo with MR imaging. The cognitive implications of this pathology are not well-understood, especially vis-à-vis deep gray matter atrophy. Our aim was to investigate the relationships between cognition and deep gray matter iron in MS by using 2 MR im...
